BIGCOMMERCE GLOBAL SEARCH
I worked on redesigning the design and feature-set of the BigCommerce global search. While this tool is one of the most used by our users, it's also one of the less appreciated because of its limited capacities and painful user flow.

THE PROBLEM

Finding what you're looking for in the BigCommerce Dashboard takes too much effort. While search is supposed to save people time and energy, our current feature actually creates a lot of frustration for our users.

THE CONSTRAINTS

  • Has to fit in with our new and modern navigation.
  • Extend the capacity of search by letting users search for a feature in the app.
  • Limited engineering resources.

WHAT'S NOT WORKING WELL?

  • Painful user flow with a high number of interactions needed before getting to your results.
  • Search feature isn't very dynamic and reactive - no autocomplete or suggestions before you submit your search.
  • Result page is mostly useless and doesn't surface the actual results.

DESIGN PROCESS

I started working on this project by going through an audit of the current functionnality to better understand all the pain points our users were facing. From there, I did a competitive landscape analysis to have a better idea of the best and worst practices around this tool. I then explored multiple solutions to finally find the best interaction possible for this tool.

ITERATIONS

The basic hypothesis of this iteration: Making search results more visual can help people get where they want faster.

PROS

  • Easy identification of the results found.
  • Top level tabs allows people to quickly filter out the results.

CONS

  • Manual filtering adds more work on the user's end.
  • Having a dedicate result page interrupts people in their workflow.

With this iteration I looked into making a Search that doesn't get in the user's way and can give results inline.

PROS

  • Searching feels way faster.
  • Better use of the space.
  • Quick glance at all results at once.

CONS

  • Icons aren't adding a lot of value.
  • Results aren't visual enough, especially when search for a product.
  • You can't filter out results to a specific category.

FINAL SOLUTION

Our final solution combines the benefits of the inline results (speed, suggestions, simplicity) with more visual results and the ability to filter out to a specific category.
