Users express themselves beyond the options that are available on a standard keyboard (alphabets and punctuation marks). Input units such as emojis, symbols, GIFs, etc are commonly used to express an idea or to communicate.
So we wanted to make sure that we gave our users ample options to express themselves effortlessly.
While the original ambition for that project was to provide our users a tool to insert emojis we quickly identified the need to scale that surface to more objects (symbols, stickers, gifs…).
Here are some explorations I did focusing on how users could effectively navigate between all types of objects:
While we were designing for the end vision of our picker, we launched a first version with emojis only.
The launch being a huge success, we launch two new iterations in the following months as it had been designed already.
Emojis only
A search bar, emoji organized per categories and an infinite scroll through container with the whole collection of emojis.
Symbols and emoticons
We added two new top categories (symbols and emoticons) with their own sub categories. Search was universal.
Gifs and stickers
Gifs being frequently used as a way to express emotions, we quickly decided to add them to the picker.
